Pilot and Aircraft
Light Sport Aviation (LSA) offers an accessible path for aviation enthusiasts to become pilots with fewer requirements and lower costs than traditional private pilot licenses.
Requirements
- Minimum Age: 17 years old for a sport pilot certificate.
- Medical Requirements: A valid U.S. driver’s license or an FAA third-class medical certificate.
- Training Hours: A minimum of 20 flight hours, including:
- 15 hours of flight training with an instructor.
- 5 hours of solo flight.
- Examinations: Pass a knowledge (written) test and complete a practical (flight) test with an FAA examiner.
Aircraft Requirements
- Maximum takeoff weight of 1,320 pounds (600 kg) for land planes, 1,430 pounds (650 kg) for seaplanes.
- Two seats maximum (pilot and one passenger).
- Maximum airspeed of 120 knots (138 mph).
- Fixed landing gear (retractable gear allowed for seaplanes).
- Single, non-turbine engine.
Flight School
Attending a flight school is the most effective way to obtain the necessary skills and knowledge for Light Sport Aviation.
Student Pilot Requirements
- Minimum Age: 16 years old to fly solo.
- Language Proficiency: Ability to read, speak, write, and understand English.
- Medical Requirement: A U.S. driver’s license or FAA third-class medical certificate.
- Flight Instructor: Students must fly under the supervision of an FAA-certified flight instructor.
Ground School
Ground school provides the theoretical foundation necessary for safe flying.

- FAA regulations and airspace rules
- Emergency procedures
Testing
Completion of a knowledge test (written exam) is required before the practical flight test.
